Ian has worked in Agriculture and Forestry since leaving school and is very much a practical person , he takes pride in his vegetable garden, despite the heavy clay soil, he built the hen and duck house himself.
As well as selling fire logs locally to residents in Petersfield and the surounding area, he looks after the numerous animals we have.
We have four Rare Breed, 'Large Black' Pigs one gilt which to hope to breed with and three boars. At present they are here at Copper Beeches while they are still small. Later they will be kept at some land we own on Torberry Hill. Torberry Farm is no longer a working farm, situated on the outskirts of Petersfield, we class Copper Beeches as a 'small holding'.
We have three Rare Breed 'Shetland Cattle' who had calves last year, two heifers which we have sold as breeding stock and are now residing in Devon and one steer. These live on rented land or else graze on the South Downs for the Conservation Board. This years offspring were born in June, one heifer and two steers.
Our sheep are Rare Breed 'Dorset Down', at present we have thirteen breeding ewes which have had a total 15 lambs, including 'Little Lady' which we bottle fed, she is now with the rest of the flock and doing well.
We are also hoping to rear our own turkeys, we have seven turkeys 'the Christmas Gang' as well as 'Henry' and 'Hen' the proud parents.
Our Bed and Breakfast and Self Catering guests are welcome to visit our animals. In fact we encourage our Self Catering guests to save any suitable waste for our pigs and chickens.
Janet and Ian married in 1971 and have two daughters, Tricia has two boys, Josh who is seven and Toby is five, they live local to Petersfield so we are able to see them quite often. Debs has two girls, Stacey is six and Neve is five, who also live locally at Midhurst.
Janet has had various jobs during her married life before becoming hostess for the Bed and Breakfast ( B & B / Guest House) in 2003. The first Self Catering Cottage 'The Dairy' became available for guest in 2005, and 'The Parlour' in 2006.
Janet derives great pleasure from looking after the various Chickens and Indian Runner Ducks, which supply the eggs for breakfast as well as making the bread and home made jams for the table.
Oscar joined us at Copper Beeches at the end of April, 2010 as a puppy of 8 weeks. We have had Weimaranas for over twenty years, our two previous dogs we rescued. Being a young dog, he can be boisterous but we have an indoor cage if need be. He thoughly enjoys his walks on the South Downs, Petersfield Heath and surrounding areas, he is well behaved with the livestock and is the most endearing four legged friend we have had. Oscar is our fifth Weimaraner.
